The photobook "Decisive Moment. The History of Ukraine's Independence in Legendary Photographs" illustrates the history of the struggle for modern Ukraine's independence through the prism of global events and highlights Ukraine's important role in contemporary world history. Today, this has become especially significant as Ukraine suffers from Russia's military aggression, once again fighting for its independence. The publication aims to present to the general public unique photographs from the lives of Ukraine and the world, previously known primarily to a narrow circle of journalists. In an era of wars, it is crucial to teach people to distinguish quality journalism from fakes and propaganda. Documentary journalism almost entirely excludes fake "ordered" reports and propaganda. Popularizing high-quality Ukrainian journalism at the level of world standards, the ability to distinguish good from evil, quality media from poor quality; preserving the historical memory of Ukrainians—these are the main tasks of this photobook.
The author of the photobook is Efrem Lukatsky, the most renowned Ukrainian photojournalist in the world, who has been working in Ukraine and global hotspots for 30 years, photographing for the world's largest news agency, Associated Press. Efrem Lukatsky specializes in war journalism. He has worked in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Gaza Strip, Transnistria, and Georgia (during the 2008 Russian-Georgian conflict), captured the arrest of Saddam Hussein, and documented the historic moment of the state flag being brought into the Ukrainian Parliament in August 1991. His photographs have been published in virtually all leading world media, including Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Independent. In 2005, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
